What Are The Different Types of Spray Foams to Choose From?
CLOSED-CELL VS. OPEN-CELL FOAM
Spray foam is a superior insulating product in terms of R-value, barrier protection, and structural strength. Prior to deciding between open and closed-cell foam, you should request application and performance information of the materials considered from the supplier. Knowing the type and performance of the foam being used prior to the beginning of a job is an important topic to discuss with the spray foam applicator to make sure you are ahead of the game.
Open-cell spray polyurethane foam, sometimes called half-pound foam, has a typical density of 0.5 lb per cubic foot and R-value of 3.5 per inch. It is typically used in the attic and walls of residential homes.
Closed-cell foam ranges in density and has a greater R-value than open cell. It is a much more rigid product and a vapor barrier. It is typically used in crawl spaces, metal buildings, shops, and agricultural structures.
